Queen Anacaona

1474–1504

Anacaona in the Taino language means ‘golden flower’.  She was a Taíno chiefess, born in Hayti.  She was one of the main chiefs when the Spaniards colonized the Tainos in 1492.

In 1503 Queen Anacaona and several other chiefs were called to a meeting by the Spanish governor Nicolas de Ovando of the region. They danced, sang and partied for his invitation. The Governor pretended to reciprocate the honors he was given during the meeting. Afterwards, he invited Anacaona and the other chiefs to witness a military drill in his honor.  Regardless of the good natured demonstrations of friendship offered to the Spaniard.  He held on to the belief of a rumor that the Indians were planning an uprisal.

During this meeting of 80 Indian leaders, including Anacaona, the Spanish Governor Nicolás de Ovando ordered them to all be arrested. They were accused of conspiracy for resisting and set for execution. The rumor ended up being the reason. Prior to her execution, Anacaona was offered freedom if she would give herself as a concubine to one of the Spaniards. Standing with her fellow Taínos in solidarity, the Caribbean indigenous female chief chose execution over marriage with a Spaniard. Her refusal cemented her legend. The Indians were then assembled in a large main house of wood and thatched roof. This house was originally built for Ovando and his companions. Those on horseback and those on foot began to surround them and at an agreed signal, all the Spaniards with spears and swords attacked them. The meeting house was set on fire to burn them alive, they did and everyone died.
